A Currency

The dress was dark blue
sequins caught the light
and flashed like silver

She ran down the hall
black sandals clicking
on chipped slate tile

Nightmares are just dreams
stripped of silk
and flipped too soon

She’d already learned
each corridor
held at least one unlocked door

The only key you’d ever need
was for keeping hope free
with ready access to water and sunshine

She was like gold
soft and pliable
valuable despite the vulnerability
