The kitchen was small,
like the house,
a Formica table
ringed by fridge and stove,
small run of cabinets
framing the one window,
sink below.
How could a space
so tight
serve as launch site
for cookies and candy
so grand
and varied?
How could a woman
so full of bitter
produce so much
sweet?
