Repainting

Standard

photoWe’ve filled the trash bags
to the top
with items no larger than a thumb
scooped from corners
and bins and drawers
the surface of the desk and dresser

These small toys and novelties
that you’ve collected
for thirteen years
and three-hundred-and-forty-nine days
discarded with such ease
and so little thought

What will you keep
as you continue to shed
your boyish self
will the man emerging
know how to choose and defend
what is most worthy
