Reductions

Standard

ReductionsYou rough beast slouching.
I’ve seen you around here before,
the Cubs cap pulled low,
eyes two slashes of pitiless dark.

Today,
are you a woman in a black dress and veil,
your fatal kiss hovering?
Bringer of malice or mercy?

Where do you wait?
Or is your agenda so booked with appointments,
you complain about never getting a moment
to stop by the mall and return the ill fitting shoes,
file your taxes,
get a massage,
phone your mother?

You,
inevitable,
as well,
you.

It is pointless to rail,
yet we do,
every time you come round,
collecting your bones,
and re-breaking our hearts.
