For Sale by Owner

We practically beg
people we know to buy this house
which sits on green slope
above pond and cerulean frost river

After 32 years
how do you part forever
from a place
where a canoe rests waiting
every morning
paddles ready in nearby boathouse

The St. Croix singing
enticing you to glide across
to the nearest perpetually submerged island
a heron rookery
float through swimming trees
head tilted skyward
survey the massive nests
cradled in every crook
the cacophony of birds
as they greet the clouds
shake awake and launch into space
dive deep for breakfast

What proper price can be set
for legions of sunning turtles
speckling each upended log
