the girl who wanted to hug the world

Standard

slipping from her lavender scented sheets
into her leopard spotted slippers
that next to the cool, bare soles of her feet
make her think of warm bellies
of slumbering cats in the full sun of the Serengeti
she quietly makes her way
to the wide window
that splits open the wall of her bedroom
ever so slightly holding at bay
a vision so vivid and spring green
painted yellow with forsythia here and daffodil there
that she
for a moment
forgets to fill her lungs with air
exhale
repeat

Her arms rise up
reach out
span first the width of this small fissure into everything
then extend wider still
as she strives to embrace it all
hold it close
and hug the whole world
