I AM (not) A DIABETIC

Standard

Around my wrist
I wear your
medic alert bracelet
every day

I AM A DIABETIC.
D. AYERS

Keeping you close
big brother

I just hope I don’t lose consciousness
get pumped full of insulin
by some eager EMT
and learn so soon
what you and dad now know

Like you said
in your thank you card
to your kidney donor, Joe
I just want more time
to watch my daughter dance
son race down the soccer field
rest my head in the hollow by my husband’s collar bone
sit at the breakfast table with my family
say I love you

You were right
measuring that time
is not important
